Middle of the pack…again…

Hi!

Well after numerous security checks (they unpacked my entire bike box on the return home) and interrogations (one women didn’t believe that my last name was Dutch…), I finally made it home!

Eilat hotel area, very Cancun-like:

The race went well for 2/3 sports. I had a less than favourable start position which put me back of the lead pack on the first lap of the swim and made me work really hard the second lap of the swim to close the gap. I managed to get back with the lead pack going into T1. I was happy with this since my last few swims have been rather weak and I would fall behind on the last lap.

The bike was good too, I had to cycle strong to make sure I was with the pack on the first lap leading into the hill (see pic below, doesn’t look too bad, but when you do it 7 times, your legs start to feel it!). There were quite a few motivated women in the group, so the pace was pretty…

Killing time in TA

Hey,
Just killing some time in the Tel Aviv airport, waiting for my flight to Eilat. It was already a long journey over here; Calgary to Toronto (4hours, plus 2 in the airport), Toronto to Tel Aviv (11hours in the air) and finally an hour flight south to Eilat from Tel Aviv.

Now I just have to fight the jet lag and get into race mode. I think it’s going to be a hot one, it’s 21 and sunny and Tel Aviv today and Eilat is usually a few degrees warmer….Should be good!

Anyway, I’m going to do some Internet surfing and then make my way over to security.
Will update later!

Up and Running (literally!)

Winter trying to make an appearance in Calgary….
Hi!

I know, I know, long time no post….well, nothing too exciting has happened recently! My run training was sidelined while I healed a stress fracture in my upper tibia, so I picked up the swimming (oh my poor arms!) and biking (inside since it’s been a bit cool-see picture). Good news though, I was given the official green light to start running again, well, walk/run anyway!

Since I was forced to skip the last 2 World Cup races, I am going to give 2007 one last chance for a great race. The next race is in Eilat, Israel on Dec 1 and I will be in killer shape for that one (well, at least on the swim and bike!). After that will be a small Christmas break into 2008 and then off to the land down under for some winter training!

Take care everyone!

Ahhh…Calgary in Fall….

Fall is my favourite season! I just came back from a great bike ride west of the city. The view was spectacular! Snow capped mountains, green, yellow & gold trees in the rolling foothills and golden hay being harvested and rolled into bails on the farmers fields! The wind was even kind to me today (after a scary windy ride last week!). What a nice day, too bad autumn is so short in Calgary!

Anyway, after being back home for a week and a half, I am finally starting to feel normal again! I think all the travel over the summer really caught up to me this week. I have been seeing a doctor about my leg too, looks like it might be a stress fracture or compartment syndrome, both of which will probably require significant time off of running. I should have all the test results soon to confirm, after that I will change/make plans for the rest of the season.

Enjoy the beautiful fall day!

Heading Home…

I’m currently sitting in the AC lounge in Heathrow. I will post some pictures of Beijing soon!!

After a quick trip to Beijing and not finishing the race (my leg was still hurting but I wanted to go and check out the course anyway, knowing I might not finish), I’ve made the decision to return home early and not race in Greece. This way I can fully heal my leg and get back to some serious training and then be in awesome shape to race the last 2 races of the season (Cancun and Eilat).

Just thought I’d post a quick update…more later!

Not the best start…

Looking back to the swim start in Hamburg….
Well, my races here didn’t exactly start off the way I wanted them too! After a just under a week over in Europe I raced in Hamburg at the World Championships.

The swim was crowed and chaotic as usual and I found myself a bit further back than I had been expecting, especially since my swim has been improving the last few weeks. I hustled through transition and found myself in good company (with strong cyclists) but there was a crash within the first 2k–I narrowly avoided that one! We worked our way up to become the chase pack and closed the gap to 1min. Onto the run my leg was hurting right away. I toughed it out for 5k hoping is would loosen up but it didn’t. I made the decision to pull out of the race going onto the 3rd lap so I wouldn’t further injury myself.

It was a but disappointing since I have never DNF’d a race (unless it was planned), so I…

Finally!

Just a quick update: This past weekend I raced an ITU Continental Cup points race in Kelowna. The weather was perfect–exactly like what I raced and trained in in Europe–Cold and rainy! The swim went well, I was able to draft off Jill Savage (Canadian National team member and Olympian) and went onto the bike with her. We biked together (she was not running due to injury) and were joined by a Japanese athlete who managed to work her way up to us (somewhat illegally…). Our lead was extended by a further 2 minutes going onto the run. I was able to come out of transition first and comfortably run in for the win! My first win at an ITU points race! I will post some pictures as soon as I can find some–my entire family, minus Bry and the Shags, were out to cheer me on–one of them must have taken a picture or two??

Now I am back home getting ready for my trip back to Europe. World Champs September 1st! Watch it live on www.triathlon.org (it…

Sorry, No Pictures!

Just a quick update; I’ve been in Victoria for the last week and bit doing some training. I left the camera at home which is unfortunate since I went on a really beautiful ride today! I road on Millstream road, it was hilly but lined with lush forest and even had nice new pavement the whole way! A cyclists dream!

Anyway, one more week here. Richard is flying in on Wednesday and then we are driving over to Kelowna for the race. Then home for a few days and back over to Europe!

Later!!

Kitz and what’s next

On the bike course–Kitzbuhel World Cup
The town of Kitzbuhel
The view from the swim start!
Well, my first 5 weeks in Europe have come to an end. The race in Kitzbuhel went well. After a mediocre swim, I was able to work my way back up to the front pack on the bike (we caught the lead pack on lap 6/8). I had a speedy T2 and ended up heading out on the run first! That lead didn’t last for long as many of the fast runners were in the same bike pack! I had been having leg pain leading up the race, but was able to tough it out and was satisfied of my effort. I ended up 21st, 2:22 off the winning time—getting better each race!

Now I’m back in Calgary for a short stop, to Victoria for a mini-training camp and then back to Europe for another month! The plan right now is to race in Kelowna (August 19th), World Championships in Hamburg (September 1st), Beijing World Cup (September 15th) and one last race…
